A selection of interesting articles, blog posts and videos we’ve spotted this month, all on the topic of security in the cloud.
Enterprise security is a high priority for every business, whether cloud-based services are being employed or not. However, all eyes are currently on the cloud from a security point of view following the recent incident of leaked photos of celebrities at the start of this month, widely thought to have been taken from the celebrities’ Apple iCloud backups. Apple released a statement denying the photo leak involved any breach in Apple systems, including iCloud. Instead, Apple claims this theft involved “a very targeted attack on user name, passwords and security questions.” Whatever the cause(s) of this incident, it has prompted widespread discussion on both a consumer and enterprise level about the importance of protecting data in the cloud.
Is cloud security concern justified or overblown? by Drew Robb takes the view that “whether a service is in the cloud or in-house, the important thing is how well it is being safeguarded”. The increase in use of cloud applications by businesses is taken as a sign that confidence in security is growing, likely because “a cloud service provider has more resources deployed to ensure the security of data and infrastructure and tends to apply best practices with more rigor.”
Fundamentals of cloud security by Ram Lakshminarayanan offers some practical tips to try to overcome security concerns as a barrier to implementing cloud initiatives, including updating your existing IT policies and considering different security layers for a ‘defence-in-depth’ strategy.
