The St. Jude storm hit southern Britain on Monday 28 October, with the worst of it taking place during morning rush hour in some of the busiest parts of the UK. The resulting transport effects were drastic, with widespread rail and flight cancellations: Network Rail said that the damage to its railway lines was “worse than expected,” causing more than 100 railway line blockages and disruption on all train services in and out of London. Transport for London (TfL) reported disruption to six Underground lines due to debris on the tracks, and around 130 flights were cancelled at Heathrow. Furthermore, many roads were impassable due to floodwater. Millions of commuters were affected by this travel pandemonium, either unable to reach their place of work on time, or unable to reach it at all.
