A selection of interesting articles, blog posts and videos we’ve spotted this week, all on the topic of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Happy reading!
California Court Makes BYOD More Costly for Companies by Melanie Turek explains a new ruling from a California court that companies with employees in that state must reimburse these employees for any work –related use of personal cell phones. Melanie explores the implications of this ruling for BYOD in the workplace, concluding that companies in California “should now be on high alert: they have less than 30 days to figure out how to abide by the new requirement–or whether to put themselves in the position of having to follow it at all”. Tom Kenshige at CIO.com also reported on this ruling, stating not only that it makes BYOD more costly, but that it “could be a decisive blow to the Bring Your Own Device mega trend”.
Meanwhile in Europe, Fred Donovan at FierceMobileIT suggests that employees are holding European firms back from BYOD. According to a recent survey by IDC, 41% of European firms don’t have any plans to allow BYOD. This is apparently because employees still “expect their company to pay for their IT devices and they are reluctant to give up their privacy to be able to bring their own devices into work”. So, as well as the concerns about IT security which are shared by other IT pros around the globe, European companies have employee reluctance to contend with.
This flowchart from Symantec is designed to walk you through everything you need to consider to create a successful BYOD Policy. It’s worth a read as a reminder of security questions you should be asking before supporting BYOD.
Finally, this Dilbert video commissioned by Citrix comically exhorts companies to “leave employees to their own devices” and embrace BYOD. Certainly worth the 34 seconds it takes to watch!
